Harold MacNaughton Sinclair

SINCLAIR, Harold MacNaughton (88), Goshen, Guysborough County, passed away suddenly on June 06, 2009 at the QEII Health Science Centre, Halifax. Born in Antigonish on June 04, 1921, he was the oldest son of John and Nellie Jane (Sinclair) Sinclair. In 1942, he joined the RCAF as an aero mechanic and served overseas until the end of WWII. In 1948, he married Mina Ruth Hudson and moved to Halifax where they lived until 1982. During that time, he owned and operated Sinclair Refrigeration and Heating Ltd. He was General Manager of Citadel Motors, General Sales Manager of Trainer GMC Ltd, General Manager of Haldart International and Fleet Manager of Scotia Chev and Peterson Pontiac. He was a member of Edgewood United Church where he was an elder for 21 years. He was a member of Armdale Masonic Lodge, The Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite Royal Order of Scotland and Philae Shriner’s Temple. He received his 33rd degree from Scottish Rite, 50 year jewel from the Shriner’s and 60 year bar from the Masonic Lodge. Harold also served as president of the Mayflower Curling Club and commissionaire of the Halifax Bridge Commission. He retired in 1982 and moved to his ancestral home in Goshen. Upon returning to Goshen, he joined the District 6 Fire Department and served as president for several years. He was elected county councilor for District 6 St. Mary’s and served for five years, also serving on District Library Board and Guysborough School Board. He affiliated back to his mother lodge Queen’s #34 in Sherbrooke and served in several offices, including Master. He was a member of Kings United Church in Loch Katrine where he was an elder since 1983. He was a member of Highland Curling Club and a chartered member of Clan Sinclair Association and is an Honorary Past President. He was an avid gardener and a loving husband, father and grandfather. His family and church were most important to him and he gave tirelessly to his community his entire life. His happiest moments were at home, surrounded by his family and good friends. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, the former Mina Ruth Hudson; sons Andrew, Lower Sackville; James (Mary), Goshen; daughters Barbara Barnard, Lower Sackville; Jane Borden (Bruce), Goshen; grandchildren Jennifer (Dan), Sara (Jon), Kimberly (Jonathan), Amy (Jeff), Matthew, Jill, Nicole, Jeremy, Craig; great grandchildren Kerri, Emily, Isabella, Jake; brothers Bill (Jean), Halifax; Jack (Gladys), Country Harbour; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother Andrew; sister Jessie; son-in-law Terry Barnard. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm in Kings United Church, Loch Katrine, and from where funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2pm with Rev. Keith Selwyn Smith officiating. Burial in Goshen Cemetery. A reception will follow in the Goshen Community Centre. Members of Queen’s Masonic Lodge #34 are asked to meet at Kings United Church Tuesday at 6:45pm for prayers for their late brother.
