Phillip "Phil" Dort a well-known resident of Grande
Prairie, AB left this life much too early on September 7, 2014 at the
age of 41.
Phil was born in Antigonish, N.S.
on June 4, 1973 to parents Everett and Jane Dort. He grew up in Cross
Roads Country Harbour, a small community where he also attended his
first school and was taught by his grandmother, Sarah Wilson and went
everywhere locally with his Gramp, Arthur Wilson. It was a place that
was dear to his heart for the remainder of his life. It was also a
safe place where everyone knew everyone and he could freely foster his
love of the outdoors, even as a small child.
He attended Riverview in New Harbour and St. Mary’s in
Sherbrooke where he met many friends and made some great memories. He
then graduated from St. FX in Antigonish with a BSc in Phys Ed and
after being a student teacher in Antigonish, he moved to Manitoba
where he took a permanent teaching job and met his future wife and
love Angie Bourke. They married in 2002; then moved to Grande Prairie
where they lived; raised Mackenna and Liam; and worked until the time
of his death.
Phil was a personable soul who
could make friends anywhere. He had a way with people that was all his
own and had a gift for making people laugh and feel better about
things. He loved the outdoor life, sports, music, cooking and being
with his family and friends. He had a great deal of love and support
in his home area of Nova Scotia and was fortunate enough to recreate
this when he moved to Grande Prairie. He was able to put a lot of
living and adventure into his short life and he will be greatly missed
by those who knew and loved him. He was definitely one of the good
guys and we are blessed to have had him in our lives for as long as we
did.
His laughter and warmth live on in his son Liam, daughter
Mackenna, and wife Angie. Loved ones who will forever miss his smile
are his mother Janie, father Everett; brother Andy (Nadean), their
children Hannah and Noah; grandmother Mildred Cameron; parents-in-law
Geraldine and Ernest Bourke; brothers-in-law Rob (Randi), their
children Max and Quinn; and Tyler (Vanessa); as well as many extended
family and friends.
Loved ones who will be
greeting him with open arms are grandparents: Arthur and Sarah Wilson
and Alex Cameron.
A celebration of his life
will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at 11:00 am at the
Alliance Church in Grande Prairie (15502 102 St.).
