SMITH, Walter
"Bryce" Age 92, Sherbrooke,
passed away peacefully in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital,
Antigonish surrounded by his family on Thursday October 30, 2014. Born
in Sherbrooke on September 13, 1922, he was a son of the late Walter
and Norma (MacDonald) Smith. Bryce resided in the Veterans’
Unit at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital for the last year and
a half having previously lived in Sherbrooke where he spent most of
his life. He was a member of St. James Presbyterian Church, Sherbrooke
and spent many years as a member of St. Mary’s
Male Choir. Bryce served overseas in Italy and Africa as a motorcycle
taxi driver during the Second World War. He worked at the Imperial
Esso Refinery in Dartmouth, as a worker for the Laborers Union in
Halifax, Historic Properties, Post Office Caretaker in Sherbrooke and
Truro and also for sanitation pickup in Sherbrooke for several years.
He was an avid salmon fisherman, hunting guide, trapper and a member
of St. Mary’s River Association. His greatest passion was
gardening and his love for cards. Bryce was a lifetime member of the
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56, Sherbrooke. He will be greatly missed
by his children, Marla (James) Porter, Country Harbour; Glen (Corrie),
Forest, Ontario; Terry (Diane), Stillwater; Martin (Delores),
Sherbrooke; Harold (Rosalie), Country Harbour; 11 grandchildren, 11
great grandchildren; sisters in law, Katy Smith, Sherbrooke; Alice
Jack, Kentville; Antoinette Harpell, West Pubnico; brother in law,
Vincent Harpell, Harpellville; many nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his wife, Rosie (Harpell), sisters, Doris Brown, Joyce
MacIntosh, Peg MacKinley; brothers, Cecil, Edgar and Graham.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm in G. W.
Giffin Funeral Home, St. Mary’s Chapel, 34 Main St.
Sherbrooke. Funeral service will be held Monday in St.
John’s United Church, Sherbrooke at 2:00 pm with Rev. Derek
Elsworth officiating. Interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery,
Sherbrooke. Family flowers only, please.
