Maitland, Mary Anne (Gunn), age 88, of Indian Harbour Lake, passed away on May 11, 2015, supported by the care and comfort of her family. Born in Denver, Guysborough Co., on February 7, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Harry Arthur and Maude May (Espey) Gunn. Mary was the beloved wife of the late Henry Crooks Maitland of Sydney. Mary was a graduate of New Glasgow High School. She trained at the Victoria General Hospital and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1949. During her years as a nurse, Mary worked at St. Rita’s and The City Hospitals in Sydney. After devoting herself to raising five children, she worked as an ambulance nurse and did medicals for insurance companies. Following a permanent move to Indian Harbour Lake in 1983, Mary worked as a Community Health Nurse before retiring at age 65. While in Sydney, she volunteered with the Association for the Mentally Handicapped and was instrumental in establishing a group home for mentally challenged adolescents. Mary was interested in writing and photography and took great delight in her rock collection as an amateur prospector. Her quick wit and sense of humour always helped us through the trying times. She will be remembered for her devotion to her immediate and extended family. Mary is survived by children: Mary Jane Maitland of Indian Harbour Lake; Carolyn (Kurt) Stangl of Anchorage, Alaska; Henry (Renee) of Windsor; Allen of Dartmouth; grandson John (Kristina) Stangl of Springfield, N.J.; step-granddaughter, Tara Lanoway of New York, N.Y.
