MacArthur, Sherman Anderson, 89,
of Goldboro, Guysborough Co. passed away peacefully in St.
Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish surrounded by his
family on Saturday, November 1st, 2014. Born in Goldboro on September
20, 1925, he was a son of the late Robert Milburn and Arvilla Hope
(Silver) MacArthur. Sherman was a veteran of the Second World War and
the Korean War having served overseas in both conflicts serving as
Transport Corporal / Ambulance Operator. After retiring from
the Armed Services in 1966 he returned to his home in
Goldboro and worked various labour jobs until he went to work for what
was then Maritime Tel & Tel as a telephone operator. He later
went to work for G.W. Giffin’s Funeral and Ambulance Service
of Country Harbour. Sherman was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion,
Arras Branch 59, Antigonish. He was a member of Goldboro United
Baptist Church. Sherman was very involved in the community serving as
Fire Chief of the Harbourview Volunteer Fire Dept. for over 8 years
and as Cub Master for the area. He was a member of the
Isaac’s Harbour Medical Center Committee, the Housing
Committee for the Isaac’s Harbour Villa, the Goldboro
Interpretive Center Committee and the Goldboro Cemetery
Committee. One of Sherman’s greatest joys was the
19 years he spent as a member of the St. Mary’s Male Choir
spreading the Lord’s work through song. He is survived by
his wife of 59 years the former Leona Nickerson; Son Philip (Shelley),
Country Harbour; Daughters Pauline (Wayne) O’Leary, Half
Island Cove, NS, Sherma (Blair) Phillips, Roberta (Steven) Phillips
both of Margaree and Elizabeth (Kevin) Halfpenny, Baddeck, NS.;
Brother Lewis (Muriel), London, Ont.; 13 grandchildren and 14
great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by Brothers, Milburn, Kenneth
and Philip: Sisters Elva and Roberta. Visitation will be in
the Goldboro United Baptist Church from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Tuesday
Nov 4th and from where funeral service will be
held on Wednesday, Nov 5th at 2 pm with the
Rev. Morley Shaw officiating. Burial will be in Bayview
Cemetery, Goldboro. Family flowers
only please. Memorial donations may be made to
Goldboro United Baptist Church or Bayview Cemetery Fund.
Sherman’s family would like to thank Dr. Gallant and the
nurses of the ALC Unit of St. Martha’s Hospital for all
their kindness and care shown to Sherman and all the family.
